Beautification

The installation of the three stunning, large than life size topiary horses are the culmination of a long process of Neighborhood Council meetings, collaboration with the Northridge Beautification Foundation, support from former local Councilmen Mitchell Englander, meetings with local city agencies such as the Urban Forestry Division, LA Department of Transportation, and the Bureau of Engineering.

The volunteer members of the Northridge West Neighborhood Council (NWNC) work tirelessly to make Northridge a place of which we can all be proud. Here is a roundup of what is happening in our part of Northridge.

On April 10 the City Landscape Architecture Department approved our design and location for placement of 3 Topiary horses on the first median South of the 118 Freeway. It remains to be seen if there will be any additional hurdles before we receive permits from the Bureau of Public Works Engineering Department and work can actually be started.

Northridge West President Lasky shares NWNC accomplishments and challenges residents to become more involved in 2018 by attending committee meetings. “We can’t do everything, but with your participation and help we can do much more.”

In February we made progress on our Tampa Median irrigation project, have scheduled a public meeting on sober living homes and asked our new CSUN Parking Ad-Hoc Committee to investigate problems in our neighborhoods caused by student parking.

We are moving forward on the Tampa Drip System, investigating options on the proposed Sober Living Home and seeking volunteers to represent us as liaisons for Animal Services, Public Works, Purposeful Aging, and Film.

At its October 2016 General Meeting, the Northridge West Neighborhood approved a funding line of $10,000 for the installation of a drip system for the Tampa Medians in an effort to save the trees.

The NWNC joined the Northridge East and South Neighborhood Councils and Northridge Sparkle in passing a $1500 grant for the purchase and installation of a flagpole.

At our October 13 meeting we heard a presentation by Roger Dolin and Marylee Camacho who are part of the Public Art Initiative at the Museum of the San Fernando Valley. They described the possibilities of a project installation on our Tampa Medians, called "It's Raining Sculpture".

The Oakridge Estate, historic home of Barbara Stanwyck, is one of the hidden treasures in our area of Northridge. The Friends of Oakridge are working towards restoring it and making it more available for public use. Meantime they periodically offer tours where you stroll and explore this great estate. If …
