Northridge West Neighborhood Council is coordinating with volunteers to make 250 fabric masks for the Northridge Recreation Center homeless facility, LAPD Devonshire Division and the San Fernando Valley Mission Food Pantry. We have donated medical masks to the hospital and funded key efforts in our community.

Northridge West Neighborhood Council has been hard at work developing Standing Rules to govern Board interactions and provide clarity and direction to the Bylaws. The draft Standing Rules document is available for review. Please reach out with comments or suggestions to Board Member Kelly Sooter.

The Northridge West Neighborhood Council held elections, seated new Board Members and launched energetic committees that are hard at work on public safety, homelessness, government affairs, planning and land use, beautification, and outreach issues. We hosted informative speakers, supported the community with grants and invite you to join us in 2020 to keep Northridge a wonderful place to live and work.

Over 250 stakeholders and community members packed Highlander Hall to hear the candidates respond to questions on public safety, ethics, use of public funds, parks and recreation, and homelessness. If you missed it, you can watch the video now!

At our July meeting several stakeholders voiced their opinions regarding Metro’s proposal for the bus rapid transit (BRT) project. While NWNC has yet to make a Community Impact Statement on the matter, we welcome stakeholders to voice their positions on the project at future meetings.

The board members went straight to work after the completion of the formal seating of board members and the election of the executive board. The board was thrilled to nominate long-time board member and community advocate Lloyd Dent as “Outstanding NWNC Senior.”

Northridge West won an award for beautifying the Tampa Median with topiary horses.

The installation of the three stunning, large than life size topiary horses are the culmination of a long process of Neighborhood Council meetings, collaboration with the Northridge Beautification Foundation, support from former local Councilmen Mitchell Englander, meetings with local city agencies such as the Urban Forestry Division, LA Department of Transportation, and the Bureau of Engineering.

The Oakridge Estate Park construction is finished and the park is open to the public. The eight-acre park has 128 new trees, 12 picnic tables, playground equipment, a small amphitheater and a meandering .3-mile walking trail. Children will enjoy the bouncy tractor and the mare and foal sculpture.

Elections for 7 seats on the Northridge West Neighborhood Council will be held on May 4.

The next Northridge West Neighborhood Council general board meeting will be a holiday mixer for the community. It will be held on December 11th. Please join us for some holiday cheer and complimentary food and refreshments. 

Topics discussed at the October 2018 council meeting include a coyote trap-and-release program proposal to the city by City Councilman Mitchell Englander, the Los Angeles Community Plan updates, the 50-acre Bloom Park groundbreaking in Porter Ranch, and the new 148 room boutique hotel in the works at CSUN, at the corner of Zelzah and Nordhoff.

“We’re trying to build trust externally [with the community],” said Moore, "...Partly, it’s listening. Partly, it’s giving people a voice — and feeling that they have a say."

The LA Department of Public Works has been repaving Harnett Street in Northridge through our request with Councilmember Englander's Office.

The Northridge West Neighborhood Council was on hand to greet people at the National Night Out Against Crime Celebration at Northridge Park on Tuesday, August 7. It was a great evening of fun with hot dogs, face painting, a screening of the movie Ferdinand and more.
