National Night Out, A Night to Remember

As a farewell of sorts to summer vacation 2018, the residents of Northridge enjoyed free activities at Northridge Park the evening of August 7. The occasion was National Night Out, and event sponsors generously provided a bouncy house, video games, raffles, hot dogs and popcorn. Law enforcement provided a rumbling helicopter flyover, and their vehicles were proudly on display. Their cars and trucks, however, were upstaged by the beautiful and placid steeds of the horse-mounted volunteers.

The Northridge West Neighborhood Council was on hand to greet people. Northridge West NC President Pamela Bolin, shown above with Board Members Matt McPherson Glen Wilson said, “It was nice to be part of the community event, meet with the stakeholders and see everyone having a great time!”

City Councilman Mitchell Englander was in his element, manning the microphone to call out raffle ticket numbers and handing out a table full of prizes to smiling children. Prizes included colorful back packs, toys, and sports balls of all shapes and sizes. Councilman Englander also dedicated the evening to Kenneth Ashford from Metropolitan Water District, for his service and unwavering protection of our air and water. The evening was appropriately capped by Ferdinand, a film about an oversized, pacifistic bull, which was projected onto an inflatable movie screen.

National Night Out is an annual community outreach event, encouraging law enforcement partnerships with the community to make our neighborhoods safer. It provides an opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances. Law enforcers of all kinds, their many volunteers, and neighborhood councils were out in force to engage the community. Captain III Lium, LAPD Devonshire, noted that our neighborhood has experienced a crime reduction, crediting in part the large number of local volunteers and the “see something, say something” attitude we have embraced.

Thank you to Councilmember Englander, Devonshire Division and Recreation and Parks for putting on this fun event.
