What Is Your Neighborhood Council Doing Now? More Than You Can Imagine.

Northridge West Neighborhood Council (NWNC) has been actively working on several projects to create a healthier, more sustainable community.

Tampa Medians Going Green

NWNC President Peter Lasky, NWNC Beautification Committee member Debbie Penman and Northridge Sparkle’s Don Larson recently met with the Urban Forestry Division of the Bureau of Public Works to discuss the installation of a drip system to save the drought-ravaged trees along the six Tampa medians. The Urban Forestry Division agreed to install new hardware for the drip system and to pay for the water, if a system is installed. The next step is to determine equipment specifications and obtain bids.

Stakeholders can show their support of the improvements on the Tampa Medians by emailing, or visiting NWNC’s Facebook page, or supporting us on nextdoor.com

Thanksgiving Baskets for the Needy

NWNC’s board voted to give a $1000 Neighborhood Purposes Grant to the North Valley YMCA’s Thanksgiving Baskets program. Each year before Thanksgiving, the baskets are distributed to needy families at four area schools—Calahan Community Charter, Topeka Charter School for Advanced Studies, Beckford Avenue Elementary and Alfred P. Nobel Charter Middle School.

Candidate for the 27th State Senate District

Henry Stern, the Democratic candidate for the 27th State Senate District seat, spoke at our September meeting. He is a senior policy advisor for Senator Fran Pavley, who currently holds the seat and is retiring this year due to term limits. Steve Fazio, the Republican candidate, spoke at our August meeting.

Stern addressed several issues of concern, including the need to tighten loopholes in Proposition 47, which returns non-violent criminals to our streets; provide entry into higher paying jobs, which would afford more families the chance to purchase a home; and strengthen the educational system through the expansion of technical training for high school students. Stern also called for a thorough review the SoCal Gas Co.’s Aliso Canyon Storage Facility, questioning the plant’s viability. A policy advisor for Senator Pavley on environmental issues, Stern helped her author a bill to close down the SoCal Gas facility, asserting that it is being used as storage facility for gas hedging—buying natural gas when it’s cheap and selling it to other utilities at a higher price when it is more expensive.

Matador Day of Service

On September 10, 2016, NWNC joined 450 CSUN students to clean areas surrounding the campus as part of CSUN’s Matador Day of Service.
