Northridge West 2015 Year in Review

2015-08-clean

Northridge West continues to be a leader in keeping Los Angeles clean. In 2015 we held a community Clean Sweep event on almost every Thursday morning. Each week we cleaned up a different major street in our district working on clearing both the sidewalk and the gutters, as well as trimming over grown trees and shrubs blocking passage on sidewalks. This effort helps beautify our neighborhood, clear storm gutters in preparation for El Niño, and invites the community to take ownership. In addition we held two Saturday events, one in January and one in August where volunteers from the Kiwanis and Northridge Christian Church joined in to clean up Northridge. We have filled over 4,000 bags with debris from our streets.

We have also assisted the City in having potholes and streets patched and repaired. At the request of our stakeholders we have formed a committee to work with Northridge East and CSUN to look into mitigating the problems caused by CSUN students parking in residential neighborhoods.

In October we helped put on the Valley Disaster Preparedness Fair which provided valley residents with tips, seminars, and resources on how to be ready for the next disaster.

Our meetings featured important speakers including Kevin James, President of the Board of Public Works who spoke about City resources available for community beautification. Community College District Board Trustee Andra Hoffman spoke to our stakeholders about progress being made at Pierce College that serves our local students. Cathy Schoonmaker, Urban Wildland Conservation Specialist with the National Parks Service, spoke about how to discourage coyotes and other wildlife from frequenting our yards while keeping them safe from deadly rodenticides.

We have ventured into our next major initiative, which is determining the feasibility of creating a public art display called It’s Raining Sculpture on the north end of the Tampa median. This project would be in collaboration with the Museum of the San Fernando Valley Public Art Initiative. The project includes installing whimsical sculpture between trees on the median between Chatsworth and the 118.  We are working with the City and Councilmember’s Office to begin to determine what permits would be required to move forward with this project.

We invite you to join us on the Northridge West Neighborhood Council Board, as a committee member or as a volunteer to continue to improve Northridge, increase civic participation and make government more responsive to our needs. We are seeking candidates right now to run in our upcoming election. Join us at our meetings on the second Tuesday of the month, 6:30pm at Calahan Elementary School, 18722 Knapp St.
